GHRFC alumni return to Honor Oak Park to compete against the current boys for the Fergus Scholefield Memorial Cup.

Match Report:

It was a lovely day for rugby on Saturday as we geared up for what was set to be a fantastic Fergus cup. Pre-match preparations were shaky at best, but any pre-match doubts were put quickly to rest as the older years started off very strong: 5 tries in all and many in quick succession from Elias, Freddie, Liam, Theo and JJ gave the older years a very comfortable lead as it approached half time. Just as the game appeared to be getting away from the younger years, Aathi finished a lovely team try to make it 29-5, before WRT destroyed any newfound confidence and bulldozed over to take us 36-5 into the half.

After the break, many were able to find their ‘natural’ positions as forwards and backs swapped roles for the final 40. In this arrangement, the younger years were able to find some better fortune, with an irreplicable 50:22 from myself and tries in the half from Kai, Ben and 2 from Caleb, who had a great outing despite his deplorable hat trick avoidance. However, the class of WRT’s cross field kicks was too good for the younger years and the older group took a very convincing lead with tries from Awosika, TG, Toby, Liam and Theo, who honourably showed both Caleb and Liam how not to avoid a hat trick in the game. As the game came to a close, we saw a potential record broken for the youngest ever GHRFC try-scorer as Quinn ran the length of the pitch to score a wonder try for the older years, capping off a brilliant team performance. Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable match and a privilege to be involved in.
