PENGUINS AGAINST CANCER
Penguins v Freshers XV Rugby
Honor Oak Park Playing Fields
Saturday 15th October 2016
The Penguins flocked to HOP for the first home game of the season having recently returned from a successful tour to Jersey. The exciting squad gathered showed a mix of youth and experience and were keen to continue their winning streak against the Freshers. After a minute’s silence in memory of Fergus Scholefield, and in beautiful sunshine, the game kicked off at a frenetic pace with some of the older boys anxious if this could be maintained. An early try by giant second row Rhys Davis, who showed the pace of a winger, calmed the nerves. The Freshers soon fought back scoring a try of their own.
The second half continued in the same vein with Pete Gretton running the show from 10 and Bryan Herry making multiple breaks from centre. A great team try was finished off in style by the veteran veteran Shay Reading. George Tsolakedis entered the fray to show that his propping days are not over and also frightened the life out of one of the students with his menacing 'growl' tackle! The ageless Chris Howell made a short cameo appearance and thankfully remained unbroken following the experience.
The game was finally won by the Penguins but the Freshers contributed to a great game of rugby and we all look forwards to both the Penguins next fixture against Camberley Vets on 10th December as well as the Freshers fixture next year.
A moment's silence is observed ahead of the game in honour of brave little Fergus Scholefield
