PENGUINS AGAINST CANCER
2022 Penguins v GHRFC Freshers Rugby Match
Wasps FC Sports Ground, Acton, West London
Saturday 5th November 2022
The annual hard-fought match between the Penguins veterans and the Freshers took place at the start of November. Here's the match report from GHRFC Captain, Freddie Spencer.
On 5th November, the Freshers XV, captained by Freddie Spencer, took on quite possibly the youngest Penguin XV, captained by Dr Tom George at Wasps FC in West London.
Conditions proved slippery, but this didn’t halt the effort to play with flare. Offloads, slick running lines and some questionable kicking ensued throughout the first half.
The Penguin XV went into half time 17-5 up against the younger generation of Guy’s men. Tries from Calum Luke and Marcus Borup early on gave the Penguins an early lead. And to finish off the half Penguins legend, Geraint Thomason, really had to “Stretch” to get the ball over the line. His conversion shaved the outside of the left post.
The second half started frenetically, with the Freshers XV remaining camped on the Penguin line for a while, before Tom Downie scored out wide to tighten the gap to 17-10. A nasty injury to Denmark international Marcus Borup brought the game to a halt, but we were back underway soon. The gap was quickly restored again with a scintillating Gary Chan switch, resulting in him running it in from 50 metres out. Penguins 24-10 Freshers. The last act of the game was Tom Downie running over the top of the Old Boys to score under the posts, but it was all too little too late. 24-17 full-time score.
Another victory for the mighty Penguins against the GHRFC Freshers. The Trophy: a Penguin.
