PENGUINS AGAINST CANCER
Fergus Scholefield Memorial Cup: Penguins v Freshers XV
Bournville RFC, Birmingham
Saturday 5th March 2022
On Saturday 5th March the students of GHRFC descended on Bournville RFC to play against a combined Penguins/Bournville/Harborne Barbarians’ team to compete for the annual Fergus Scholefield Memorial Cup.
Due to the upcoming UH Cup Final the following week, the students sent a club team, resting key 1st XV players, however, they were still confident of claiming the cup, following three consecutive wins for the Penguins.
With the ski slopes back open and a return to crowds at sporting events, the Penguins were only able to offer Tim Price, Jamie Jackson and, of course, Barney Scholefield to the Barbarians’ team. As the Penguin Barbarians met each other for the first time during the warm-up it became clear that they would be more suited to a pick-and-drive game centred around their pack.
Picking up on this potential advantage, our fly-half, Chester Scholefield, kicked the ball out on the full from kick-off ensuring a scrum as the first action of the game.
Unfortunately, despite winning this against the head, the immaculate 4G pitch was more suited to the students open and running brand of rugby. Ultimately whilst the students won at a canter, the game was hugely entertaining with multiple tries scored by both sides.
In fact, so many tries were scored that no-one, including the referee, was quite sure of the final score. This made for a hugely enjoyable after-game social and raffle that was a fitting end to the day after a thoroughly enjoyable 80 minutes of rugby played in the best GHFRC spirit.
Many congratulations to the students for winning the Fergus Cup. The combined Penguins/Barbarians will be looking to win it back next year.
